Established in 1958 by the visionary Ruma Guha Thakurta alongside the eminent Salil Chowdhury and the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Calcutta Youth Choir has etched its name in the annals of music history. Renowned for its captivating renditions of folk and mass songs, the choir has been a beacon of cultural excellence for over six decades.
Under the esteemed leadership of Satyajit Ray, who served as its first president, the choir soared to new heights. In July 1974, a 20-member folk song and dance troupe, led by Ruma Guha Thakurta, clinched the prestigious first prize at the Copenhagen Youth Festival, marking a glorious moment in the choir's journey. Notably, the choir also graced the 25th anniversary celebrations of India's Independence Day in Delhi, further solidifying its stature on the national stage.
Over the years, Calcutta Youth Choir has had the honor of performing at illustrious events, including the historic visit of Nelson Mandela to India in 1990 and the felicitation of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in 1998. In a remarkable testament to its enduring legacy, the choir celebrated its 36th anniversary in December 1994, commemorating five decades of Ruma Guha Thakurta's unparalleled contributions to music, dance, and cinema. Dignitaries such as Jyoti Basu, Bijoya Ray, and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya graced the occasion, underscoring the choir's profound impact on the cultural landscape of West Bengal.
In September 2010, Calcutta Youth Choir marked its 52nd anniversary with a fitting tribute to six dedicated members who had faithfully served the choir for over half a century. This dedication to excellence was exemplified once more in April 2012 when the choir celebrated its 54th anniversary, a poignant occasion as it marked the last show conducted by the illustrious Ruma Guha Thakurta.
With more than 5000 mesmerizing performances to its credit, Calcutta Youth Choir continues to enchant audiences with its soul-stirring melodies and unwavering commitment to preserving India's rich musical heritage. Join us on this enchanting journey as we celebrate the timeless magic of music, led by the indomitable spirit of Ruma Guha Thakurta.
